I got the chance to visit some genuinely great destinations during my travels throughout Europe, but Spain, with its grand cities, stunning costas, and gloriously relaxed way of life, was the one that left me feeling the most alive and inspired.
And it's not just the bright, colorful Barcelona or the regal magnificence of Madrid that keep drawing me back; it's also the irresistible allure of sunny Seville, the Moorish grandeur of the Alhambra in Granada, and the towns trapped in time of Spain's lesser-known autonomous communities.
Some have nature on their side, while some are full of character and man-made architectural marvels. Spain is exceptional in all of these, providing visitors with a richness of natural beauty, interesting history, delectable cuisine, and a cultural landscape that is both rich and authentic and inventive and innovative.
Old customs are preserved by quirky festivals, Gaudi's masterpieces coexist with modern art galleries on Barcelona's captivating streets, and Romanesque churches dot the country's lush north. Spain is home to 49 World Heritage Sites, including amazing Roman monuments, beautifully preserved medieval cities, and exceptional national parks brimming with rare plants and animals.
